I stayed at a lovely hotel in Paris the first time around and while it was not the Four Seasons - it was not "cheap" by any stretch and a few people made snotty comments when I recommended it to people (who made no mention of budget). ... It's usually more their age and what they risk than their spending level. Maybe the backpackers are young, their backs can still take sleeping on the floor... but maybe more of them are more likely to go clubbing and drinking in places ...
